Conditioning
Cleaned wheat from storage is prepared for milling by a conditioning stage. Water is added to the wheat in a tempering mixer shown in the photo below. This makes it easier to separate the bran from the endosperm (flour portion) of the wheat kernel. The wetted wheat is then stored in tempering bins for a period of time depending on the hardness of the wheat and the finished product being made. From the tempering bins, wheat is blown by air pressure through metal tubing (like a vacuum cleaner in reverse) to the flour mill for processing.

The tempering mixer evenly distributes water to all the wheat kernels.

The tempering bins are designed to empty first in - first out.
