Bay State Milling Company Sustainability Statement.

Sustainability may have become a business buzzword that has reached peak trendiness, but here at Bay State Milling, it has always been part of the fabric of our company. Since our founding in 1899, we have believed that exceptional ingredients come from stewardship and sustainable practices. While our commitment has always been there, we thought it was important to formalize our efforts and clearly position sustainability as one of our organization’s strategic imperatives.

Our new Sustainability Statement codifies our pledge to conduct business in a way that is economically viable, environmentally sustainable and socially responsible. Aptly, we’ve established three pillars of sustainability for Bay State Milling Company:  Economic, Environmental and Social.

We believe in creating and sharing value across the supply chain, engaging in sustainable practices from “farm to factory” and investing in the wellbeing of our employees, customers and growers.

Putting our beliefs and intentions on paper is an important step, but we are also committing to measure and improve our performance. Bay State Milling is pursuing B Corp certification. According to Bcorporation.net, “B Corps are for-profit companies certified by the non-profit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.”  Today, there are 2,100 Certified B Corps, like Plum Organics, Ben and Jerry’s and Patagonia, from 50 countries and over 130 industries.

B Lab uses a 200-point audit to verify certification. Using the B Impact Assessment, points are given based on a lengthy checklist that encompasses all aspects of a business. Certification is granted to companies that reach 80 points or higher. Using an assessment tool like this helps Bay State Milling better measure and manage our performance on social and environmental issues. It also sets a bar for improvement and a common language to communicate our sustainability efforts.

Over the past year, Bay State Milling has made great strides in the journey to pursue B Corp status.  We’re pleased with our improvements over the past several months and see a path to verification.

As we seek certification, we humbly recognize this is a journey that requires the support of the entire organization, our supply chain partners and our customers. It is certainly not a simple endeavor, but it is a worthy one and consistent with our core purpose and values. We believe that business can be a force for good, and we are positioned to maintain that force for generations to come.
